Sample quality
The quality of a diagnosis begins before the sample reaches the laboratory. In virology and molecular microbiology, the conditions under which samples are collected, transported and stored can directly influence the stability of the sample and the reliability of the result. Desiccation, delays in processing or overgrowth by other microorganisms can compromise the analysis, particularly when working with respiratory samples or other types of clinical samples intended for sensitive techniques.
Laboratories therefore require transport systems that help maintain the integrity of the sample from the point of collection through to processing. A suitable transport medium facilitates the preservation of the target microorganisms, reduces the risk of sample deterioration and helps to standardise a critical stage of the diagnostic workflow.
Vircell Transport Medium is a versatile medium suitable for different types of samples, microorganisms and diagnostic methods, which prevents the sample from drying out. Key features:
- It is supplied in screw-cap tubes, available in various sizes.
- The range includes formats with or without a swab, as well as options with one or two sterile swabs, to suit different sampling and laboratory processing requirements.
- The medium is formulated using Hanks’ Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) and incorporates HEPES, gelatine, BSA, sucrose, compatible antibiotics and sodium azide as a preservative. This composition helps to maintain the integrity of the sample during transport and storage prior to analysis, facilitating its integration into microbiological and molecular diagnostic workflows.
